Utdanningsdirektoratet (Udir) is the national agency for primary and secondary education and kindergartens. It reports to the Ministry of Education and Research (Kunnskapsdepartementet) and manages the public registers of kindergartens, primary schools and upper secondary schools in Norway. Udir runs the National School Register (Nasjonalt skoleregister) and collects information about each school, including ownership form (public or private), pupil numbers, year groups, special units and contact details. This information feeds Placepoint's map layers for education.

What Utdanningsdirektoratet gives you
The data, and what it decides
For home buyers, especially families with children, being close to a school and kindergarten is often the single biggest factor in choosing where to live. For developers, the same data is a required part of prospecting: school intake areas, school catchment areas and capacity determine who a home will appeal to and how its price is likely to develop. Note that some municipalities (Bergen kommune is a well-known example) do not share their school catchment areas through Udir. For these, we fetch the data directly from the municipality.
Utdanningsdirektoratet reports to the Ministry of Education and Research and is responsible for developing, communicating and managing the regulations for kindergartens, primary and secondary education, and vocational training. Among other things, we manage the national school register and publish official data on kindergartens and schools in Norway.
