The species database, already linked to every property.

Artsdatabanken is Norway's national knowledge bank for biodiversity, and the underlying source of all species observations and red list assessments shown in Placepoint. Artsdatabanken collects and quality-assures data on Norwegian species and nature types, runs the Norwegian Red List and the Alien Species List, and publishes Norwegian nature in the NiN (Natur i Norge) nature type system.

What Artsdatabanken gives you

The data, and what it decides

For a property developer, species data is decisive at the zoning stage: red-listed or sensitive species can trigger consideration zones and requirements for mitigation measures under the Nature Diversity Act (naturmangfoldloven). For a broker or valuer, the same dataset gives an early indication of whether a plot has biological value that could limit building rights. Artsdatabanken is an independent agency under Klima- og miljødepartementet and is based in Trondheim.

A knowledge bank for biodiversity. Up-to-date, easily accessible knowledge about nature types and species.

The species database

Registers, maps and services as the vendor publishes them.

Collection

We collect from the source, not from a copy of a copy, as often as the source is updated.

Normalisation

Linked to cadastre number and Organization Number, quality-assured, with source and date on every field.

Your workspace

Map, property panel, reports, Placepoint API and MCP.

Why Artsdatabanken in Placepoint

The register is free. The time it takes to use it is not.

One lookup, not one portal per source

Artsdatabanken is one of 37 vendors. The data sits on the property alongside registers, plans and risk from the others.

Linked to the right property

We link the data to the cadastre number before you open the map. No keys, no import.

Updated when the source is

Update frequency follows the source, and every field shows a date.

Traceable back to the source

Every dataset is labelled with Artsdatabanken as vendor, so you can document the underlying data in a report.

The datasets

5 datasets from Artsdatabanken

  • The species database is the underlying data owner behind several Placepoint datasets. The data reaches us through Kartverket and Miljødirektoratet:
  • Species of national management interest (provided by Miljødirektoratet)
  • The species database: species observations and Red List categories (provided by Kartverket)
  • NiN mapping units (provided by Miljødirektoratet)
  • Sensitive Species Data (provided by Miljødirektoratet)

Each dataset follows its source's update schedule, shown for that dataset. The category is the map layer group the dataset sits under in Fusion.

How to get started

Four steps

Book a demo or create an account

We show you the data on properties you know.

Look up an address

Use an address, cadastre number or the map. The panel shows what is registered on the property.

Turn on the map layers you need

The layers from this source are in the layer picker, sorted by category.

Get the data via API or MCP

The Placepoint API and the MCP server give you the same data programmatically.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about data from the species database

Ask a question
How up to date is the data from the species database?

The table above shows how often each dataset is updated, which follows the source. Every field in Placepoint shows its source and date.

Can we use data from the species database in our own systems?

Yes. The Placepoint API exposes the same datasets programmatically, and the MCP server makes them available to AI agents. You can export extracts and reports from the platform.

Does it cost extra?

The datasets are part of your Placepoint subscription. Where the source charges a fee for individual documents, such as registered documents from Kartverket, the price follows the source's fee.

Are we missing a source you use?

Tell us at support@placepoint.no. We add sources all the time, often because a customer asked for one we did not have.
