Reindeer husbandry in Placepoint
Geographical boundaries for reindeer husbandry areas in Norway, from the reindeer husbandry administration at Landbruksdirektoratet. The dataset covers around 40% of Norway's land area. Reindeer husbandry takes place in almost 140 of the country's municipalities, from Finnmark in the north to Engerdal in Hedmark in the south, as well as in Trollheimen. Just over 3,000 people are affiliated with Sami reindeer husbandry, which has around 215,000 animals.
The dataset separates seasonal pastures (spring, summer, autumn, autumn-winter, winter), and each seasonal pasture is further divided into two intensity classes. This reflects that reindeer husbandry is extensive, with large seasonal migrations between the high mountains and winter pastures near the coast. The area boundaries are indicative. Reindeer husbandry is a Sami industry with its own legal basis in the Reindeer Husbandry Act.
If you are a developer in Northern Norway or in the Trøndelag mountains, the reindeer husbandry layers are a required check early in the project. New zoning plans or infrastructure (power lines, wind power, cabins, roads, hiking trails) in reindeer husbandry areas need an impact assessment and dialogue with the reindeer grazing district, and can lead to a formal objection. Part of Placepoint's map layers for Agriculture and Nature. Related: Marka boundary, Protected watercourses.

About the datasetArable land
Arable land is land that, if cultivated, can be brought up to the standard of fully cultivated land. It is a latent topsoil reserve that is not necessarily in active production today.
About the datasetHow often is reindeer husbandry updated?
Updated manually. The frequency follows the source and is shown on the dataset in Placepoint.
Where does the data come from?
From Landbruksdirektoratet. We collect the data, check its quality and link it to the right property, with the source and date on every field.
How do I see reindeer husbandry on a property?
Look up the address in Fusion and turn on the Agriculture map layer. The dataset is a separate layer there. Click on the map to see the details in the property panel.
Can I get the dataset programmatically?
Yes. The same data is available in Placepoint API and in Placepoint AI through MCP, so you can bring it into your own systems and agents.
