Arable land, already linked to every property.
Arable land is land that, if cultivated, can be brought up to the standard of fully cultivated land: a latent reserve of farmland that is not necessarily in active production today. The dataset is derived from the historical digital land capability map (DMK) and is updated automatically against the annual versions of AR5.

What the dataset contains
Arable land in Placepoint
Arable land is land that, if cultivated, can be brought up to the standard of fully cultivated land: a latent reserve of farmland that is not necessarily in active production today. The dataset is derived from the historical digital land capability map (DMK) and is updated automatically against the annual versions of AR5. It is managed by the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO). Previously fully cultivated land that has become overgrown with forest is typically included; land that has been built on or permanently converted to other use is removed.
The dataset can be recorded on several underlying land cover types: surface-cultivated land, infield pasture, forest, open land and bog. This means it covers more than what AR5 shows as "fully cultivated". For a developer, arable land is a required check at the zoning stage: farmland protection under section 9 of the Land Act (jordlova) also applies here, and municipalities can require an exemption or a specific justification for development on arable land. It is part of our map layers for agriculture. Related: Land cover types (AR5), Marka boundary.

The main classification in AR5, NIBIO's national land resource map, based on vegetation, natural drainage and human influence.
About the datasetReindeer husbandry
Geographical boundaries for reindeer husbandry in Norway, from the reindeer husbandry administration at Landbruksdirektoratet (the Norwegian Agriculture Agency).
About the datasetHow often is arable land updated?
Annually. The frequency follows the source and is shown on the dataset in Placepoint.
Where does the data come from?
From Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research). We collect the data, check its quality and link it to the correct property, with the source and date on every field.
How do I see arable land for a property?
Look up the address in Fusion and turn on the Agriculture map layer. The dataset is a separate layer there. Click on the map to see the details in the property panel.
Can I get the dataset programmatically?
Yes. The same data is available in Placepoint API and in Placepoint AI through MCP, so you can bring it into your own systems and agents.
